ELGIN YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Founded in 1976, Elgin Youth
Symphony Orchestra attracts a
national reputation for inspiring
student curiosity, imagination,
critical thinking, and collaboration.
Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra auditions hundreds of students from nearly 70 cities in Illinois and Wisconsin, supports eight large ensembles of more than 300 student musicians, and operates a thriving Chamber Music Institute.
EYSO engages students intellectually as well as musically, encouraging critical-thinking skills that benefit future pursuits and inspiring students to become “expert noticers,” skilled in observing details and how they contribute to the whole. Artistic Director Matthew Sheppard, a leader in music education, builds a comprehensive curriculum each musical season – one that helps students develop artistically and technically – but also prepares them for a future of complex ideas, creative risk-taking, and leadership as global citizens.
EYSO’s thoughtful nurturing of musical and personal growth encourages students to become well-rounded, thoughtful communicators, and leaders in their ensembles, schools, and communities. Thousands of EYSO alumni hold successful careers as professional musicians, educators, and as leaders in their chosen field.
